Who We Are

Our Mission

Based in Georgetown, Kentucky, the Parkinson's International Foundation, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating awareness both globally and locally by promoting education and advocacy for Parkinson's Disease (PD).

The public perception of PD is that only a small group of elderly people are affected-- but in actuality, there are over 10 million worldwide in all age groups, races, and cultures. We are dramatically underserved by current resources.

Our volunteers are located in Canada, South Africa, and the USA. This allows a physical presence, in addition to the one existing online, and in turn empowering those living with this disease to lead richer lives.

What We Do

Our 2017 inaugural event called Ponies for Parkinson's was held in April during Parkinson's Awareness Month. This happens to be during spring meet at the Keeneland Racecourse-- a perfect way to blend Kentucky heritage and tradition while fostering a better understanding of PD in our community. Hosting this benefit in the bluegrass annually, will provide a place of education, acceptance, and hope.

Parkinson's International Never Give Up is an online support group serving over 800 members since 2015. It's a community for people with parkinson's (pwp) and their loved ones to meet and share experiences. By providing a strong, positive support system, our goal is to ultimately encourage pwp's to live a better life.

Perspectives of A PwP (Person with Parkinson's)

as experienced by Frances Evans...

It is in the most mundane routine, we find comfort. Simple moments with familiar objects, movement, and gesture. The favorite spoon to stir your morning coffee, the paper-thin, worn pyjamas we reach for...

So when you find yourself fretting and cursing the night because sleep won't come, but feel drowsy at a stoplight— life is good, but deep melancholy lingers.

What then?

It’s the small changes, you just aren't yourself, and "that hand" that won’t lay still on your desk... You sit in a Dr.'s office and a suit says "Parkinson's Disease".

Stupified and shaken to the core, you stumble out into a sunny day. Knowing in your heart, nothing will ever be the same, but see that everything else remains. People flustered in traffic, walking their dogs, hugging their kids, buying wine— smiling.

What do you do?

It is a natural reaction in a society where "knowledge is power" to arm yourself... but don't! Just sit with the feeling, a little. Go to your comforts and wait for the reverberation to settle. You may feel grief, relief, or both.

There is now a name for what ails you. The collection of oddities that plague and worry you. Hold your ground to keep fear at bay, and know that over time, it'll be ok— really. Grief is a great place to visit, but you don't want to live there.
